Our security score widget
To help keep your mailbox optimally protected at all times, the "security score" widget is available on the start page. It shows at a glance how secure your mailbox currently is and gives you simple tips on how to further enhance the protection of your privacy.
More clarity, more security
The "security score" widget bundles various protective measures into an easy-to-understand points system. At a glance, you can see where your email account is well secured and where there is room for improvement.
The higher your score, the better you protect your privacy and personal data. With just a few clicks, you can ensure your mailbox is optimally protected against unauthorized access.
Minimum protection made easy
We require a minimum level of security for your email account. You can remove the widget from the start page once you have reached the minimum of 30 points. You can reach this level by using a secure password that meets our new requirements (20 points) and by setting up a password reset code (10 points), for example.
If you go further and activate additional security measures, you benefit from a higher security standard and the best possible protection against unauthorized access.
Here is an overview of the points allocation and explanations of the available security features:
- Custom login name (30 security points)
In the settings you can define a different username so you no longer log in with your publicly known email address as the username, but with a private username.
- Two-factor authentication (30 security points)
To further secure your account, we recommend using two-factor authentication methods such as Passkeys or an authenticator app. If your password is guessed or falls into the wrong hands, an attacker still cannot access your account without the second factor.
- Backup codes (10 security points)
Backup codes can be used once if a configured two-factor authentication method is not available. This way you do not lose access to your account if your second factor is defective or lost. You only receive the security points for "Backup codes" if you have set up at least one two-factor authentication method.
- Current password requirements (20 security points)
In 2025 we increased our password requirements. Please ensure your password meets the new requirements (at least 12 characters, at least one special character, one number, one uppercase letter, and one lowercase letter).
- Protocols disabled (20 security points)
To reduce the attack surface, you should disable protocols (e.g., POP3 or WebDAV) that you do not need.
- Password reset code (10 security points)
If you ever forget your password or a hacker sets a new one, you can regain access to your account with the help of the password reset code.
The color scale as a guide
- Red (below 30 points): Low security score — improve urgently
- Yellow (30–69 points): Solid security score — still room for improvement
- Green (70+ points): High security score — optimally protected
With the new security score, you have full control over the protection of your mailbox. Each individual measure brings you one step closer to a thoroughly secure email experience — simple, transparent, and effective.
